Starcadian Goes Galactic With ‘Sunset Blood’ and Explains How To Make a Music Video With $200

We managed to snag an interview with Starcadian, the artist behind the retro music video He^rt and the full-length album Sunset Blood. During our discussion Starcadian talked about the 80’s movies, video games, and pop culture that shaped his album’s sound and music video aesthetics. It became apparent during our conversation that Starcadian is deeply motivated by the emotions he felt watching Labyrinth and other films of his youth.

This is absolutely not done tongue-in-cheek at all. This is pure honest love for this type of film making.

Though his work was featured as a Vimeo Staff Pick and went viral a year ago, Starcadian is humble about his successses. The talented musician and filmmaker spoke about the search for his musical identity and his gratitude for the support of friends and colleagues during the production of Sunset Blood.

One day, Rob [O’Neil] texted me: ‘Dude, this guy is giving away a cockpit. Should I get it?’ I’m like, “Are you kidding me? We’re making a fucking video out of this!”

Interestingly, we discovered that the album began as a youthful concept to create a sci-fi opera. Holding on to that dream, Starcadian has produced music and visuals worthy of comparison to The Last Starfighter. The space-traveling musician talked about his long-term strategy for the album and revealed that he is currently creating the video for his song Chinatown.

The original plan was to basically make an album that is the original motion picture soundtrack to the best 80’s movie never made. And the way to tie it in was to … make a music video for every track on the album. And when you put them together, it makes that 80’s movie.

With a little luck and lot of hard work, we’ll soon be enjoying Starcadian’s feature-length Sunset Blood movie.

Hate to say it, but I think we can all agree that THIS is the sound we were hoping for when Daft Punk announced their new album. Starcadian has not only taken over the reins of that abandoned sound, but has given it a modern edge and sent it hurtling through the cosmos. I cannot wait for what he has in store for the future. LOVE!!
