Peter Jackson released a teaser poster for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The second part of the prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy is set to premier December 13, 2013. A teaser trailer will debut June 11. Here’s a high resolution version of the poster.

Why Katharine Haché is Playing Games With Stories
Katharine Haché is a graduate student at East Tennessee State University that has developed interactive fiction using TWINE. We started our discussion talking about classic arcade games Burger Time and Mario Bros. Not unlike many of us who grew up in the 80’s, Katherine played those games with her parents. She pointed out how those early experiences helped generate fond family memories and affected her current interests in storytelling. Other points that were made in the interview pertained to the nature of video games, the publishing industry around them, and the tropes and clichés their stories often rely on.

Starcadian and DJ Meegs to Perform at Red Rocks on H Street for Yuri’s Night DC 2014
Organizers for the Yuri’s Night DC event previously held at Science Club will be hosting a free event at Red Rocks on H Street this year. The event celebrates the first human in space Yuri Gagarin who orbited Earth on April 12, 1961 aboard Vostok 1. Interestingly, April 12 also marks the anniversary of the first shuttle launch in 1981.

We managed to snag an interview with Starcadian, the artist behind the retro music video He^rt and the full-length album Sunset Blood. During our discussion Starcadian talked about 80’s movies, video games, and pop culture that shaped his album’s sound and music video aesthetics. It became apparent during our conversation that Starcadian is deeply motivated by the emotions he felt watching Labyrinth and other films of his youth.
