WolfCop Sinks Its Teeth Into Cannes and Chews Its Way to a Sequel

Teen Wolf eat your heart out, WolfCop has arrived. The movie about an alcoholic police-officer-turned-werewolf will be released on June 6 throughout Canada.

How can you deny the appeal of the ridiculous premise and old-school practical effects? I know 14 year old me would have eaten this up.

WolfCop received $1 million in financing and is the first film to be chosen for production by the CineCoup Film Accelerator. The movie was shopped to film distributors during two buyers screenings at Cannes in May 2014 where it received positive interest. The buzz on WolfCop has already led to an announcement by CineCoup about the production of a sequel set to begin in fall 2014.

Similar to tech start-up accelerators, the CineCoup program is a 15-week long bootcamp meant to educate filmmakers while building support for their project. The model is disruptive because it provides filmmakers an opportunity to compete on an even playing field for funding, shows them the value of minimum-viable-product, and educates them on building community using social marketing.

Filmmaking teams apply to CineCoup with a two-minute trailer then advance through a gamified selection funnel that’s designed to package their projects and build fan support on the CineCoup social web platform.

I’m anxiously waiting to see the box office results. Good ticket sales numbers for WolfCop will only help strengthen the case for the model CineCoup is using to support Canadian independent film creators.
