This was an unexpected find on SpaceNews.com today. I took the photo above of Elon Musk while I was working as the digital strategist and community manager for the Review of U.S. Human Space Flight Plans Committee. The “Augustine Committee” lasted through the summer of 2009 and this photo was taken at a public meeting held to discuss the future of human spaceflight in the United States. Elon Musk’s SpaceX presentation occurs about 30 minutes into this video:

Starcadian Goes Galactic With ‘Sunset Blood’ and Explains How To Make a Music Video With $200
We managed to snag an interview with Starcadian, the artist behind the retro music video He^rt and the full-length album Sunset Blood. During our discussion Starcadian talked about 80’s movies, video games, and pop culture that shaped his album’s sound and music video aesthetics. It became apparent during our conversation that Starcadian is deeply motivated by the emotions he felt watching Labyrinth and other films of his youth.

Returning from the Edge of Space, A Tribute to Felix Baumgartner
Felix Baumgartner is slated to do a 120,000 foot skydive from the edge of space on Sunday, through the Red Bull Stratos Program. An attempt on Tuesday was cancelled due to weather. It’s an inspiring feat– defying gravity to get to the edge of space and shirking common sense by jumping out of a perfectly good… balloon.
While Baumgartner is at it, he will be breaking the sound barrier, going mach speed– like Chuck Yeager without the X-1. Incidentally, Yeager broke the sound barrier October 14, 1947. Baumgartner may potentially be doing it again sans aircraft October 14, 2012. As Matt Scott puts it: “To infinity and beyond… and back again…”

Shareable Parts of Reality
Will the next big content format contain bits of reality? USDZ could be a hint of things to come. Imagine programmable self-contained bits of volumetric information that can be shared with others. The process will be simple:
1. Scan a real clock
2. Program the digital version of the clock
3. Share the clock and it’s code as a single file so that others can instantiate it in their reality.

Creating Sustainable Systems through Collaboration and Crowdsourcing
“In 2010 150 billion garments were produced around the world…a dye house uses up to 200 tons of water for each ton of fabric it dyes…”
With those words a challenge has been posted to http://launch.org to try and solve the unsustainable components of the materials development system.

Vintage 1977 NASA Video talks about Voyager 1
On September 12, 2013, NASA officially announced that Voyager 1 had left the solar system and begun it’s journey into interstellar space. Voyager 1 was launched on September 5, 1977 to study the outer Solar System and interstellar medium. As of August 2013, it is 125 Astronomical Units (AU) from the Sun. One AU is equivalent to the average distance of the Earth to the Sun, roughly 145.5 billion miles. Voyager is currently the furthest man-made object from Earth.
As a throwback to the year Voyager 1 was launched, we found NASA’s Highlights of the 1977 Aeronautics and Space Report. The report outlines some of NASA’s projects at the time, including the Space Shuttle, Voyagers, Landsat, Spacelab, HEAO-1 and energy research.

A Swimmer’s Guide on How To Make Swedish Goggles
Back in the early 1970’s Tony Malmsten, a successful swim coach in Sweden, invented goggles for one of his swimmers who suffered from allergies and eczema due to the foam found on goggles. The Monterbara, later named Swedish Goggles, quickly became a common product in Sweden and eventually became “the most copied goggles in the world”. One of the main reasons this style of goggles became so popular was that by building it yourself you were ensured a perfect fit.
