There’s a quiet intensity about the short film Prospect that hooks you right away and keeps you glued to your seat. Premiering at the SXSW 2014 film festival, Prospect is a coming of age story of a teenage girl as she and her father search for valuable resin on an alien planet.
Directors Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell were inspired by films like Blade Runner, 2001 A Space Odyssey, the original Star Wars, and Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Westerns. The directors hope to capture the same feel and texture of the films that inspired them and I feel they have.
With only a 13 minute running time and a budget of less than $25,000, there’s a rich world created in the story that left me wanting more. Prospect proves that you don’t need millions of dollars to make good films.
