An Unofficial NASA TV Commercial by a Citizen Scientist

This is what happens when you take a great song like Genesis by Justice and add NASA.

The piece was produced by Reid Gower and uses a variety of public domain and copyrighted material to show the magnitude of what NASA is accomplishing. Not only does this work show NASA’s international appeal, Reid is Canadian, but it also displays how an audience can empower themselves to contribute to a message. Below is Reid’s TEDxVancouver presentation on why he’s producing these unofficial videos.

During his presentation Reid shares his thoughts concerning the times we live in:

I believe that we live in a truly spectacular era in human history. Consider for a moment the sheer number of planetary firsts in recent memory. Just over a century ago, the Wright Brothers nervously lifted off the ground for about 12 seconds. After 4 billion years of life on Earth, a species had evolved flight with the aid of technology. 42 years later, we enter the atomic age in the New Mexican Desert. And just 24 years after that, we strapped our fragile mammalian bodies to rockets and flew to the Moon.

OK, revolutions in human progress used to be measured in thousands or even tens of thousands of years. And yet we have the first human flight, weapons of mass destruction, space exploration, animal cloning,  and the Internet. All within a single human lifetime.

Recent initiatives to produce citizen scientists appear to be paying off. What do you think of Reid Gower’s efforts and what have you done to promote science recently?
